My garden scene influenced by Nolde and canalware art

This is in acrylic and features patches of my garden but not necessarily in the right places .. a bit like Eric Morecambe playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order! I wanted to use the ideas I had gained from Emil Nolde, big bold flowers, but seem to have ended up with a cross between that and canalware art roses.  I think I have overworked several parts and it started to look “muddied” so have called a halt.

It's so difficult to convert one's vision to reality!! I love the bold flowers but as you say other parts are a bit hazy, may be some contrast or shadows might help.

Thank you Adrienne. And for the advice too, which was the same as Alice's for my Nolde painting! This point is where I really miss the physical presence of Alice and others for hands on practical "this is how to ...." Alice's vimeos are simply great and I really  couldn't set off on a project without them but I've come very late in life to art and feel I still need grounding in the basics! Whatever I achieve I regard as a happy accident!!

I know how you feel, I only started Alice Class January 2019 and I'd not done any Art since the 60's at school age 14. So it's all new to me too, I know nothing about techniques or the different paints, just feeling my way like you. Keep doing what you're doing cos your work's great and you should feel proud of what you're achieving.

Thank you Adrienne for such supportive words and it's reassuring to know you have similar feelings. You have such an eye for detail and such patience and thoroughness which is well rewarded by your beautiful results.  It is also so helpful seeing what everyone else is doing and getting ideas and inspiration from them too!

Joining in this conversation I'd agree with the observations made so far. I find your descriptions very entertaining and enlightening Lucy -you say a lot with a few words (I need to learn this skill). It is harder to guide and support from a distance, but be encouraged that the only sure way to improve is to keep making art regularly which is what you are doing. You are also making life much harder and much more interesting (artistically speaking) by embracing such a wonderful array of media, techniques and subjects (as suggested by me the butterfly)..... so please do be encouraged: every painting, sketch and doodle contains the seeds of inspiration and growth for the next in some form. You are unlikely to find each piece turns out you had hoped or imagined -you are playing and exploring and will make mud pies as well as masterpieces. It is very hard for perfectionists to accept and embrace this reality.

I will happily make technical suggestions for development of this piece if you like -but it would be helpful to know what you are aiming for stylistically (other than Nolde's boldness!)

By the way this is not a mudpie (in fact its not muddy at all) and has lots going for it, and as its acrylic its relatively straight forward to add layers.

My roses went that way too i wonder if it's one of those pr programmed things we do before we learn to see.
  7. Bolder like Nolde
Thank you Alice for the advice. I have decided to go for the decorative rather than the naturalistic, to ditch the barge ware influence and to be bolder like Nolde. That’s it now as I need to make a start on the “holiday” project!

  8. Delightfully decorative
Bolder, brighter and better! It is good to see this in its final evolution Lucy -so proud of you taking this on again. I love the striped flowers at the front and the statue has a mischievous feel, the shed sits very snugly now -its edges nicely softened by the poppies and the stronger sky colour.
