Which one is better?

There's something about starting a watercolour that I find really inhibiting! That fresh sheet of paper; knowing how hard/impossible it is to remedy the bits I don't like; the fact that it dries lighter than intended etc.. The quick version that I did in my sketch book seems, to me, better than this painting that took more like 2 or 3 hours.

I haven't started my "holiday" yet but I did do the sketch without taking my pencil off the sheet.

  1. Re: Which one is better?
    That's a successful watercolour
  2. Can I sit on the garden fence?

I know what you mean (about starting a new watercolour being daunting) and also how the quick and loose watercolour sketch is very appealing. However the second version of your painting is very good too, in different ways. They both have their own strength and qualities -so maybe its comparing apples and oranges. Perhaps with lots of practice the two approaches will fine a happy middle ground?

I absolutely love the flowers and foliage in the newest painting.
