I chose this painting because of the joy of the flowers.  First mistake.. it is some years since I used canvas board and I forgot to prime it! This is only the second time I have used oils and I’m not sure that I will use them for the next project. So, on to the painting. I found it hard to get the flowers etc in the right place despite spending a long time drafting them out.  Overall, I can recognise what it is supposed to be, so that is a win, even if it is not quite like the original.

  1. Oh I love Emil Node -thankyou for picking him!
Actually a very good start here Lucy -compositionally spot on. It would be tempting to leave it here and indeed some of Nolde watercolours are much looser and more abstract than some of his oils -and they are no less for it. Having tracked down the original I can see that it is the contrasts that need work -which doesn't surprise me for oil painting which requires waiting for layers to dry or nearly dry before you can continue. The colour in yours currently is mostly saturated and intense and whilst preserving plenty of that you need to add some highlights and shadows to create more depth.

Keep going with this it will be with it.

It's probably a pre-primed canvas -so unless the paint was being absorbed like oil into kitchen towel on the canvas the priming would have made a difference.

Don't give up on the oils -they will reward your loyalty and besides they seem to like you!

Lucy, I love your painting. I,too, am a great fan of Nolde (are we allowed to confess to that?)

And I had in mind a painting I'd like to try as homage to him.

Thank you Jennie. I must confess I did not know his work before I started Google searching garden paintings. His flowers are spectacular.

I noted also that he had a rather questionable political history! And his grotesque paintings are weird .. to me,  anyway! I hope you enjoy painting your homage to him.
